The 40 days that the spies in the desert spent spying out the Land of Israel occurs during the months of Tamuz and Av. According to the Sefer Yetzirah, the sense of the month of Tamuz is sight while the sense of the month of Av is hearing. The incident of the spies occurs in the Torah portion of Shelach. Seeing and hearing of both the spies and the people were so sorely lacking. Therefore, we discussed various aspects of rectifying the sin of the spies for their lack of seeing beyond the superficial and the people hearing without proper discernment.
